Most homeowners’ insurance policies offer solid protection for your home and belongings, but when it comes to your most valuable items, the coverage may not be as complete as you think.

That’s where valuable items coverage (also known as scheduled personal property coverage) comes in.

What Are “Valuable Items”?

Valuable items are typically high-value possessions that may exceed the limits of your standard homeowner’s insurance policy. These can include:

  • Jewelry (engagement rings, watches)
  • Fine art or collectibles
  • Antiques
  • Designer handbags
  • High-end electronics
  • Musical instruments

While your homeowner’s policy does cover personal belongings, it often includes coverage caps for certain categories, especially jewelry, which may only be covered up to a few thousand dollars in the event of theft.

Why Standard Coverage Might Not Be Enough

Let’s say you own a $10,000 engagement ring. Your policy might only cover $1,500–$2,500 for jewelry theft.

That means you could be responsible for the remaining loss out of pocket.

What Valuable Items Coverage Does

Adding valuable items coverage allows you to:

  • Insure items for their full appraised value
  • Protect against a wider range of risks, including accidental loss
  • Avoid or reduce deductibles for those specific items

In many cases, this coverage protects your items even if you accidentally lose them; something standard policies typically don’t cover.

When Should You Consider It?

You should consider valuable items coverage if:

  • You own items worth more than your policy limits
  • You’ve received or purchased expensive jewelry
  • You travel frequently with high-value belongings

You want peace of mind knowing your most treasured items are fully protected

Your home insurance is designed to protect you, but it’s not always built to fully cover your most valuable possessions.
